The kinaesthetic learner is one who's prefered learning style is doing, touching and making. many of my male students are kinaesthetic learners.

Hands On activities

  • Lego Robotics - Lego mind storms, RCX bricks and the new NXT robots. These are brilliant. Students concieve concepts, design, test, program, refine, modify and succeed with out even realising the tremendous lessons they are learning. I use robotics at all levels in my secondary classes from newbies to my old hat senior IT students. It never fails to please. The guru of Lego, and the master of the constructivist classroom in my opinion is Gary Stager.
  • Starter Sheets for Lego Robotics - this is a set of six starter activities for lego robotics.

  • Intel QX3 microscope - These are a USB microscope which has a 10x, 60x and 200x objective lens. The are rugged, reliable and fun. The software is targeted to the younger audience, they were released as a toy, but is very usable. Try time lapse microscopy.
  • Smartboards and Mimio - Interactive white boards are potentially a brilliant tool for engaging and motivating students. The hardest part of the IWB is the interactivity. Getting interactive with your students, it is also the greatest potential
  • Tablets - Tablets are the new laptop. I see one to one computing programs making the move to tablet based rather than laptop based in the near future


The level of engagement that students get and the learning that occurs when students construct and program their own games is amazing.


Science, mathematics, geography and computing all lend themselves to using data logging. This is a powerful tool for not only attracting the kinesthetic learner but subject specific activities

Video creation & claymation

I have my students create instructional videos as part of their assessment tasks. I ofetn have students produce claymation movies. Its brilliant to teach storyboarding, time management and the fundementals of video - framerate, camera shots and angle, lighting etc
  • Avid FreeDv - Its free and good
  • Pinnacle Studio 9+ This is a tool I find to be really user friendly and simple for student and staff alike. Its powerful but very user friendly
  • Ulead Video Studio
  • Windows Movie Maker - use movie maker 2 and goto tools and set the photoduration down to 0.125 seconds. this will give you a frame rate of 8 frames per second. not brilliant but good enough
  • iMovie
  • iStopmotion as the name says great stopmotion for the mac.
  • Gawker Free time lapse camera app. great for Science.
  • Web camera - any old web camera will do - I use Logitech quickcams for student claymation. Often the software with the camera is very useful
  • Microsoft Photostory (version 3)
  • Camtasia This is techsmiths screen capture tool and I swear by it.
