Technology is increasingly ubiquitous. We have to change how we teach, how we assess, what we teach, when we teach it, where we are teaching it, and with what.

Welcome to the 21st Century

Welcome to the 21st Century is a brief look at the 21st Century learner, what are the charactoristics that a learner today in our technology enabled society has. This page links to other 21st Century articles, posts and pages. I have also included a page on comparing the 20th and 21st Century educational paradigms. This page begins to place some of the changes between the two different educational paradigms. We often hear about the 21st Century Learner, but what about the 21st Century Teacher? Here are some thoughts and ideas about the 21st Century teacher and the characteristics they would possess. About how we facilitate 21st Century Learning. When we look at 21st Century education we must also consider too.

Going Solo

SOLO stands for Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes. Developed in 1982 by John B. Biggs and Kelvin Collis it is essentially a hierarchy which has 5 stages or levels of learning that attempts to assess the students development based on the quality of their work. Like Bloom’s taxonomy, it looks and structures many of the key action verbs used in assessment into different learning levels. Solo Taxonomy is a useful tool have started developing materials for SOLO Taxonomy. This is another excellent tool in our pedagogical toolkit - Solo Taxonomy

Bloom's Taxonomy

Bloom's Digital Taxonomy - This is my attempt at updating Bloom's Revised Taxonomy to include emerging activities and be more inclusive of technology. EduTeka has created a Spanish translation of Bloom's Digital Taxonomy. The PDF version can be downloaded from the Bloom's Digital Taxonomy Page. Blooms Taxonomy Quick Sheets

These are resources I have created for Presentations. They outline the different taxonomic levels and provide the Digital Taxonomy Verbs with some (this is not exhaustive) possibilities for classroom use.

Bloom's and Assessment. This looks at examinations and assessments. While we focus on Higher order thinking to prepare our students for the 21st Century, our examinations test lower order thinking. This is a work in progress.

Learning styles and ICT


Gardner's Multiple Intelligences and ICT - this is a new resource developed for the learning@schools 09 conference. This resources links the different intelligences to various traditional and digital activities and learning processes. The digital activities are matched to various web 2.0 and offline technologies and tools.
Pedagogic Skills, IWB's and other technologies - this is based on an article on the integration of IWB's into mathematics but reach well beyond this subject area or technology

ICT and Learning Style - this is based on a series of presentations I have done on learning styles and the integration of ICT

NeoMillennial Learning styles is a very interesting paper from Harvard University on the changes to learning in digital natives with that advent of ubiquitous computing. Ian Jukes paper on Understanding Digital Children is well worth reading and I like the parralells that can be drawn with Neo-Millennials.

Web 2.0 and other tools

Visible Thinking is a series of thinking routines from Harvard University. They cover core elements, creativity, truth, fairness and understanding.
The wikimedia foundation products also lend themselves to the read/write learning style. Its worth looking at wikimania too.
I have updated the page on comic creation tool - This pages is broken down into some classroom uses, online and installed applications (this includes ipad and ipod). Comic creation tools hese are so powerful and enjoyable.updated.jpg
The 3i's of Internet Safety. This is updated to include video resources.
I have started a section on Professional Development resources for Web 2.0 tools. The main sources are sites like the commoncraft show and Educause. The page is Web 2.0 PD resources
