Educational Origami is a blog and a wiki, about 21st Century Teaching and Learning.
This wiki is not just about the integration of technology into the classroom, though this is certainly a critical area, it is about shifting our educational paradigm. Its really about PEDAGOGY.
Pedagogy - the method and practice, thought some might say art of teaching
Technology is increasingly ubiquitous. We have to change how we teach, how we assess, what we teach, when we teach it, where we are teaching it, and with what. Its a tall order, but these are exciting times.
Welcome to the 21st Century
Welcome to the 21st Century is a brief look at the 21st Century learner, what are the charactoristics that a learner today in our technology enabled society has. This page links to other 21st Century articles, posts and pages. I have also included a page on comparing the 20th and 21st Century educational paradigms. This page begins to place some of the changes between the two different educational paradigms. We often hear about the 21st Century Learner, but what about the 21st Century Teacher? Here are some thoughts and ideas about the 21st Century teacher and the characteristics they would possess. About how we facilitate 21st Century Learning. When we look at 21st Century education we must also consider too.
The Conscious Competence model of professional learning. This is a useful resource for ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) trainers and facilitators.
21st Century Pedagogy - This page looks at what is really the most crucial element of 21st century Education - Pedagogy - how we teach.
Traditional vs Digital Approaches This page compares traditional methods of teaching and proposes digital methods. These are cross platform and also include applications for the ipad, and ipod touch
Digital Citizenship is emerging as one of the biggest issues facing educators. The Digital Citizen is my take on this complex issue. The Digital Citizen AUA or Acceptable Use Agreements have updated and refined. There are now three agreements based on the Digital Citizenship model, one for Senior Students, one for Middle Years and one for the younger students students. The Web publishing agreement has been updated.Digital Citizen Analysis Tool I have developed and uploaded a Digital citizen analysis tool for investigation and examining the schools policies and procedures around digital citizenship. The tools and a brief explanation are on the Digital Citizen Analysis Tool page.
Digital Citizenship and BYOD This is a reflection on the growing trend in BYOD or Bring Your Own Device programs and the critical Nature of Digital Citizenship
Technology Audit Tool, which attempts to categorise the use of technology into one of three levels, Literacy, Augmentative or Transformative Technology Use. This is based on the work of Bernajean Porter.
Going Solo
SOLO stands for Structure of Observed Learning Outcomes. Developed in 1982 by John B. Biggs and Kelvin Collis it is essentially a hierarchy which has 5 stages or levels of learning that attempts to assess the students development based on the quality of their work. Like Bloom’s taxonomy, it looks and structures many of the key action verbs used in assessment into different learning levels. Solo Taxonomy is a useful tool have started developing materials for SOLO Taxonomy. This is another excellent tool in our pedagogical toolkit - Solo Taxonomy
Starter Sheets
These are some resources for staff and students for some of the more stable and permanent Web 2.0 Tools. Some of the starter sheets are focused on classroom use while a second set is focused on the use of technology for formative and summative assessments. Click here to link to the page or navigate via menu. There are also a series of starter sheets for Lego Mindstorms which are available in this page
There are starter sheets for:
Bloom's Digital Taxonomy - This is my attempt at updating Bloom's Revised Taxonomy to include emerging activities and be more inclusive of technology. EduTeka has created a Spanish translation of Bloom's Digital Taxonomy. The PDF version can be downloaded from the Bloom's Digital Taxonomy Page. There are also a number of rubrics for various digital activities including:
Blooms Taxonomy Quick Sheets
These are resources I have created for Presentations. They outline the different taxonomic levels and provide the Digital Taxonomy Verbs with some (this is not exhaustive) possibilities for classroom use.
Bloom's and Assessment. This looks at examinations and assessments. While we focus on Higher order thinking to prepare our students for the 21st Century, our examinations test lower order thinking. This is a work in progress.
The wiki also contains several other resources on Bloom's and Bloom's Revised Taxonomy. They include:
Bloom's Taxonomy and Digital Approaches - this is an attempt to match the stages of the learning process to various ICT tools. I have updated this to include technology related verbs (see Bloom's Digital Taxonomy) and also started linking activities and technologies to these verbs.
Gardner's Multiple Intelligences and ICT - this is a new resource developed for the learning@schools 09 conference. This resources links the different intelligences to various traditional and digital activities and learning processes. The digital activities are matched to various web 2.0 and offline technologies and tools. Pedagogic Skills, IWB's and other technologies - this is based on an article on the integration of IWB's into mathematics but reach well beyond this subject area or technology
ICT and Learning Style - this is based on a series of presentations I have done on learning styles and the integration of ICT ICT and the Visual Learner - This is the first part of four on learning styles and ICT tools. This page now ties Web 2.0 Tools together with Visual Learners ICT and the Auditory Learner - This is part 2 of 4 on learning styles and ICT tools - This page now ties Web 2.0 Tools together with Auditory Learners ICT and the Read/Write Learner - this is part 3 of 4 on learning styles and ICT tools. This page now ties the mass of powerful and varied Web 2.0 Tools together with read/write Learners. ICT and the Kinesthetic Learner - This is the final part of this 4 part series on learning styles and ICT.
Visible Thinking is a series of thinking routines from Harvard University. They cover core elements, creativity, truth, fairness and understanding.
The wikimedia foundation products also lend themselves to the read/write learning style. Its worth looking at wikimania too.
I have updated the page on comic creation tool - This pages is broken down into some classroom uses, online and installed applications (this includes ipad and ipod). Comic creation tools hese are so powerful and enjoyable. The 3i's of Internet Safety. This is updated to include video resources.
I have started a section on Professional Development resources for Web 2.0 tools. The main sources are sites like the commoncraft show and Educause. The page is Web 2.0 PD resources
Web 2.0 tools is updated to include MASH UPS. Web 2.0 Productivity or Office Tools are now in a separate page

NeoMillennial Learning styles is a very interesting paper from Harvard University on the changes to learning in digital natives with that advent of ubiquitous computing. Ian Jukes paper on Understanding Digital Children is well worth reading and I like the parralells that can be drawn with Neo-Millennials.
